In 2026, games will make their debut at the Gothenburg Book Fair—set in one of the world’s leading gaming nations. We can already announce that Josef Fares, one of the world’s most successful game developers, and Polish fantasy and horror author Andrzej Sapkowski, best known for The Witcher series, will take part.
“Games have a lot to learn from literature when it comes to storytelling. I also believe literature can be inspired by how we build worlds,” says Josef Fares.
More than 4.7 million Swedes played video games in 2024—a figure expected to grow by nearly one million within just a few years. Swedish game studios continue to play a leading role internationally, topping sales charts and dominating global awards. In 2025, the Swedish games industry generated more than SEK 37 billion in revenue—surpassing film, music and literature combined.
“Andrzej Sapkowski and Josef Fares are superstars in the gaming world, and I’m incredibly proud to welcome them to Gothenburg. Just wait until we can reveal more guests—this September, the entire Swedish Exhibition & Congress Centre will be sparkling with star power,” says Matilda Westermark, editor of the Book Fair’s games theme.
Andrzej Sapkowski is one of the most influential voices in modern fantasy, best known as the internationally bestselling author of The Witcher series and the Hussite Trilogy. What began as a short story about the witcher Geralt has grown into one of the most acclaimed fantasy series of all time.
Translated into more than 40 languages and with over 30 million copies sold, The Witcher continues to be a global phenomenon, captivating new generations of readers.
The theme is organised in collaboration with Göteborg & Co.
