He has no money, speaks not even a word of English, and lost his brother when he boarded the wrong ship in Gothenburg. Brenda Navarro’s Ashes in the Mouth is an award-winning novel exploring the breakdown of a family and immigrant life in present-day Europe. Navarro moves between the violence of Mexico and its patriarchal structures to the pronounced racism found in Spain towards Latin American immigrants.
