Gothenburg Book Fair 2026 Theme: Popular Adult Education

At Gothenburg Book Fair 2026, we highlight Popular Adult Education – the Nordic tradition of non-formal, community-based learning that strengthens individuals, fosters democracy, and promotes lifelong learning. We explore how access to knowledge and culture strengthens the individual, social cohesion, and democracy.

In a rapidly changing world marked by growing polarisation and disinformation, Popular Adult Education is a key to fostering understanding, critical thinking, and democratic dialogue. Access to Bildung, art, and culture is essential for public discourse, as well as for personal growth and the ability to actively participate in society.

With roots in the 19th-century popular movements and the holistic Nordic tradition of Bildung, Popular Adult Education embraces the development of the whole person – moral, emotional, intellectual, and civic. Through study associations, folk high schools, and educational programs, people are given the tools to shape their lives and participate actively in society. Digitalisation opens new pathways to learning but also requires media literacy. Popular Adult Education further contributes to existential well-being and social cohesion.

The theme at the Book Fair highlights the power of Popular Education to unite, inspire, and foster participation, while reminding us of Bildung’s role as a cornerstone of an open and democratic society. It is presented in collaboration with the Swedish National Council of Adult Education, the Swedish Academy, the University of Gothenburg together with Folkuniversitetet, and the Swedish Bible Society.
