Gothenburg Book Fair 2027 Theme: Democracy

What happens to democracy as the world changes? As new technologies rewrite the rules, trust is put to the test and freedom of expression comes under threat? And what will it take not only to preserve democracy, but to help it develop? Democracy will be the main theme of the 2027 Gothenburg Book Fair.

Democracy is more than a system of government. It is about freedom, power, responsibility, justice, resistance, participation and freedom of expression. It is the backbone of our society, but also something that must continually be discussed, defended and developed.

Yet AI-driven disinformation, authoritarian movements, shifts in geopolitical power and declining public trust are challenging much of what we have long taken for granted. At the 2027 Gothenburg Book Fair, authors, researchers, poets, journalists, teachers, experts, activists, policymakers and visitors will explore some of the most pressing questions facing democracy today. The programme will range from in-depth examinations of global challenges and debates on rights and politics to conversations about literature, knowledge and society.

Particular attention will be given to the next generation. How can we give children and young people the knowledge, confidence and tools they need to participate in democracy, make their voices heard and help shape the society they are growing up in?

Meeting others and exchanging ideas are essential to a democratic society. The 2027 Gothenburg Book Fair will be a powerful expression of that principle.
